Jill E. Aebker
Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary, Tim Hortons Inc.

Jill is Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Tim Hortons Inc., where she serves as an executive team member with responsibility for the company's legal affairs. Since joining Tim Hortons in 2006, she has held positions of progressive accountability. Prior to joining Tim Hortons, Jill was Corporate Counsel at Wendy's International, Inc. and practiced corporate and health care law for Squire Sanders LLP and Eastman & Smith Ltd. She has spoken at numerous programs on governance, compliance and securities, and other topics. 

Jill holds a Juris Doctor degree, a Master of Health Administration degree, and a Bachelor of Arts degree, all from The Ohio State University.

David W. Anderson
President, The Anderson Governance Group

David is President of The Anderson Governance Group (ww.taggra.com), an independent research and advisory firm dedicated to assisting owners, directors and executives enhance corporate performance. He serves as board and CEO evaluator for some of the world’s most respected financial institutions in Canada. The Anderson Governance Group advises regulators, institutional investors, private equity, boards and management teams on matters such as governance process and structure, board effectiveness, owner-board relations, board-management relations, director and CEO succession, director pay, risk governance and risk-calibrated strategy.

David writes on governance and leadership for publications in Canada, the UK and the US, and is widely republished in other countries. His scholarly articles have appeared in Corporate Governance: An International Review, Journal of Managerial Psychology, and Leadership Quarterly. David has chaired two not-for-profit boards and served as Special Advisor to the NACD Blue Ribbon Commission on Board Evaluation in 2001 and to five subsequent Commissions. Directorship magazine named David to its “Directorship 100 – People to Watch” list of the most influential thinkers and practitioners in US corporate governance in both 2010 and 2011.

David holds a Ph.D. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from The University of Western Ontario, an MBA from The University of Toronto and the ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors in Canada.

Timothy M. Banks
Partner, Fraser Milner Casgrain

Tim advises organizations on practical solutions to governance issues and litigation risk, particularly with respect to corporate records, privacy, e-commerce, data use and directors and officers responsibilities.  He is a partner in the Business Law Department of the 

Toronto office and head of the national lead for our Privacy Practice. He blogs at www.datagovernancelaw.com. As a result of his depth of experience in a wide variety of business law issues, Tim is also the head of the Toronto Research Group, which provides reasoned opinions on litigious or potentially litigious issues.

Over the past 18 years, Mr. Keeling has developed significant expertise in the shareholder services and corporate governance arenas. He has a broad network of contacts in the legal, investment banking and Issuer communities in Canada and the U.S., and has emerged as an authority in Canada for issues involving strategic solicitation or corporate governance advisory issues.

 

Anne F. Barnes
Vice President, Branch Manager, Chubb Insurance Company of Canada

Anne is currently the Branch Manager for Chubb Insurance Company of Canada’s Vancouver office. For more than 15 years Anne has worked in the Professional Liability and Insurance business in Canada, Bermuda and across the United States, which included three years in Structured Finance and Credit Derivative insurance products in New York. She is a committee member of the Vancouver chapter of the Insurance Bureau of Canada and is a past participant on the Forum for Corporate Directors Education and Programming Committee.

Anne holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of British Columbia and has successfully completed levels I and II of the CFA exams.

Paul Beauregard
Chief Legal Officer and Corporate Secretary, MTS Allstream

A leading in-house lawyer in Canada, Paul has been recognized as a “Top 40 under 40” lawyer, and received the “Governance Gavel Award” from the Canadian Coalition for Good Governance. He has a wide range of experience in M&A, corporate and securities laws, board and governance issues, as well as the management of large and complex litigation.

Paul is currently the Chief Legal Officer and Corporate Secretary of MTS Allstream Inc., one of Canada’s leading national communication solutions providers in business for over 100 years with over 5,500 employees across Canada. MTS Allstream has nearly two million customer connections across Canada and an extensive national broadband and fibre optic network that spans almost 30,000 kilometres. The company is listed on the TSX with an equality value of approximately $3 billion. Prior to joining MTS Allstream, Paul was VP Law, Mergers and Acquisitions at BCE / Bell Canada and early still, an Equity Partner at Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP.

Paul received his B.A. (Hons.) in Economics and Political Science from the University of Winnipeg in 1993. After spending a year working in Japan, Paul earned his J.D. (formerly LL.B.) in 1997 from the University of Toronto. He is a member of both the Ontario and Manitoba Bars.

Grant K.D. Borbridge QC
Executive Vice President, Investments and Chief Counsel, Emergo Group of Companies

Grant is the Executive Vice President, Investments and Chief Counsel of the Emergo Group of Companies, a leading global private equity and venture capital investment group. He is a member of Emergo’s Global Portfolio Investment Committee, co-leader of the Group’s Transactions Team, and sits on the Boards of Directors of the parent corporation, its key subsidiaries and entities in which Emergo holds investments. In his role as Chief Counsel of the Emergo Group, Grant coordinates and oversees all of the Group companies’ worldwide legal and compliance activities.

Grant was called to the bar in 1990 (AB) and holds a BA, LL.B and MBA. In 2011, Grant completed the Directors Education Program and achieved the Certified Director (ICD.D) designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors.

Richard Bridge
Barrister & Solicitor, Lawyer for Charities

Richard is a lawyer based in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley. His primary area of practice is charity and non-profit law. His clients are a wide range of charitable organizations, foundations, non-profit organizations and philanthropists across Canada. Other areas of his work include co-operative development and public sector organizations and issues. Richard has worked internationally, including projects in China. He has also created courses and taught in these areas at the University of Victoria Law School and BCIT, and has given countless public workshops and training sessions in every province in Canada. He has also published a variety of articles in these fields.

Richard was called to the British Columbia Bar in 1991 and the Nova Scotia Bar in 2006.

John E. Caldwell

Former President and Chief Executive Officer, SMTC Corporation

John has extensive executive level and board experience having served as a chief executive officer in three public companies for over eighteen years. Through his career he has also served on a total of thirteen boards of directors.
John was President and Chief Executive Officer at CAE Inc., the world leader in civil and military flight simulation and training services and Geac Computer Corporation, a leading ERP software company. He recently retired from being President and Chief Executive Officer of SMTC Corporation, an international public electronics manufacturing services company. 

Currently, John is a Director for Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., a world leader in semiconductors for computing and consumer electronics; Faro Technologies, Inc., the world leader in three-dimensional manufacturing measurement systems; IAMGOLD, a leading mid-tier gold mining company; and Samuel Son & Co Limited, one of the largest North America metal processor and distributor. He sits on three audit committees, chairing two; four corporate governance committees, chairing one and three compensation committees.

John has broad board and executive level experience in distressed situations including Stelco Inc., Geac Computer Corporation, Mosaic Group and SMTC Corporation providing valuable insight into enterprise risk. Previous boards also include ATI Inc., CAE Inc., Cognos Inc., Parmalat Canada, Rothmans Inc., and Sleeman Breweries. John also has a background in finance, having served as a chief financial officer of CAE Inc., and Carling O’Keefe Breweries and attained his chartered accountant designation with PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

Maria Capozzi
Principal, Strategic Initiatives & Board Governance, Office of the Auditor General (Manitoba)

Maria has been with Manitoba’s Office of the Auditor General (OAG) since 1998. She has extensive experience in conducting corporate governance reviews, assessments and audits of Boards of Directors in the public sector. She has authored numerous OAG Reports to the Manitoba Legislature, including her most recent governance report on the Appointment Process to Manitoba’s Agencies, Boards and Commissions. Her 2009 governance report, Study of Board Governance in Crown Organizations, provides an informative overview of leading practices and common challenges in providing effective governance in the public sector.

Maria has authored several published articles on corporate governance practices, and has been invited to speak at national conferences and to numerous public sector and not-for-profit organizations about the challenges facing Directors in ensuring effective board governance. 

Maria holds a Masters in Public Administration, and a Bachelor of Arts in French and Political Science. Prior to joining the OAG, Maria worked with a number of private and public sector organizations, including Manitoba Public Insurance, Kleysen Transport Ltd., Manitoba Department  of Labour, and Investors Group Inc.

Gigi Dawe
Principal, Risk Oversight and Governance and National Practice Leader, Governance, Strategy and Risk, Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA)

Under the direction of CICA’s Risk Oversight and Governance Board (ROGB), Gigi oversees activities focusing on improving the quality of corporate governance and the oversight of risk management in organizations. To that end, her primary responsibility is to communicate pragmatic, authoritative information on corporate governance and risk oversight in the form of public forums, presentations and guidance publications for boards of directors. Publications include director alerts, a “20 Questions” series and a series for financial leaders.

Gigi is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors, the Institute of Corporate Directors, and the International Corporate Governance Network. She is a past board member of Active Healthy Kids Canada and Family Daycare Services Toronto. She currently sits on the board of the CIBC Centre for Governance and Risk Management at Simon Fraser University.

Gigi is currently pursuing a Master of Laws at Osgoode Hall Law School.

Mary De Frenchi
Vice President, Sales and Accounts, BoardVantage

The Vice President, Sales and Accounts at BoardVantage, Mary has brought over 500 customers online to BoardVantage – working closely with them to accelerate their adoption of board portals, and to develop best practices for a paperless and mobile environment. Prior to BoardVantage Mary was Director of Marketing at Interwoven, responsible for large-scale initiatives around customer acquisition. Earlier in her career, Mary was Manager of Channel Programs at Genesys Telecommunications (now part of Alcatel), and held marketing management positions at Lockheed Martin.

Mary holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from San Diego State University.

Antonella Deo
Head, Subsidiary Governance Office, Royal Bank of Canada

Antonella is an experienced corporate and securities lawyer with extensive transactional and corporate governance experience in the context of global financial institutions. An experienced corporate secretary and governance professional with an understanding of global governance standards in large, globally regulated, financial institutions, she is currently the Head, Subsidiary Governance Office at Royal Bank of Canada, Canada’s largest financial institution and among the top 20 largest banks globally, where she is responsible for establishing the strategic direction for legal governance of RBC subsidiaries worldwide and leads a global team of professionals located in seven international offices. In 2011 RBC was recognized as having the Best Overall Corporate Governance in the International category at the annual Corporate Governance Awards held in New York, recognizing RBC’s reputation for leadership in the area of subsidiary governance. 

From July 2001 to November 2004 she held the position of Senior Counsel at RBC, with primary responsibility for RBC’s public financing transactions. Prior to that time she practiced law at Torys LLP, one of Canada’s leading law firms, where her practice was focused primarily in the areas of public finance, securities law and M&A.

Antonella is a member of the Ontario bar. She holds an LL.B. from Queen’s University and a BA (Hons.) from the University of Toronto.

Julie Desjardins
Technical Advisor, Sustainability, Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA)

Julie is a chartered accountant and an independent consultant in the area of performance measurement and business reporting. She is he Technical Advisor to the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants on sustainability matters and is a member of numerous national and international committees. She has authored and co-authored a number of publications on corporate reporting to capital markets and related governance, including the 2011 publication Sustainability: Environmental and Social Issues Briefing Questions for Directors to Ask.

Julie is on the board of Transparency International Canada and received two Ontario order-in-council appointments to elite provincial committees. She is the recipient of two Governor General of Canada medals for dedication to community service.

Lisa French
Head of External Relations (Americas), International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC)

Based in New York, Lisa currently oversees the IIRC’s outreach efforts in North and South America. Prior to joining the IIRC, Lisa served as Technical Director at the Global Reporting Initiative and Principal, Guidance and Support at the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants. Lisa’s industry experience includes work at 3M Canada Company, Metso Minerals and Ford Motor Company. Lisa has also consulted to the International Finance Corporation on investment strategies, training programs and external communications.

A licensed professional engineer, Lisa holds an MBA in Finance and Business & Sustainability from the Schulich School of Business, York University and an Engineering Chemistry degree with an environmental specialization from Queen’s University.

Catherine Gordon
President, SimpleLogic Inc.

Catherine is Founding Partner and President of SimpleLogic Inc., and a leader in plain language disclosure. She has been helping companies for over 20 years to communicate more clearly and effectively with employees, directors, investors and analysts, working with Canadian and US firms like Merrill Lynch Insurance Group, Nations Funds, TIAA-CREF Life, and more recently with many of Canada’s leading firms in the oil and gas, mining and energy sectors.

Catherine is an expert in simplifying corporate disclosure, including CD&A, MD&A, AIF and sustainability reporting and is involved in the emerging area of integrated reporting – combining strategy, financial and non-financial performance, governance and compensation disclosure to give investors a more holistic view of companies and their ability to create and sustain value.

Catherine has an honours degree in English literature, and has completed the ICSA Directors’ Education and Accreditation Program (Acc.Dir). Paul Gryglewicz

Albert J. Hudec
Partner, Farris, Vaughan, Wills & Murphy LLP

Al is a corporate lawyer with 30 years of experience advising boards of directors on corporate governance matters and complex corporate and financing transactions. His areas of practise include all legal aspects of corporate governance and corporate finance, including representation of boards and special committees, mergers and acquisitions, public and private equity and debt financings and regulation of listed companies, with emphasis on the North American resource technology and private equity/venture capital industries. Glenn G. Keeling

Mr. Keeling began his career in the mid 1980's, holding a number of senior management positions in the electronic publishing and newswire communications services industries in 

Canada , most notably at Canada NewsWire, The Globe & Mail (Info Globe) and The Financial Post (FP Online). In 1998, he became President and Chief Executive Officer of Georgeson Canada , and he held this position until 2007, when he moved to Laurel Hill Advisory Group as a founder and partner.

Over the past 18 years, Mr. Keeling has developed significant expertise in the shareholder services and corporate governance arenas. Thomas J. Longworth
Director, Port Metro Vancouver

Tom has almost 40 years of executive and board level experience in a range of industries (consumer and industrial products, distribution and third party logistics, building materials and information technology) and geographic regions including North America, Asia, Australia and Europe. He has held various senior positions including Managing Director of JOS Synergy Limited in Hong Kong, member of the Jardine Matheson Group, Vice President of Telus Enterprise Solutions Inc., Vice President of ISMBC (IBM & Telus as shareholders), Senior Vice President of Canfor Corporation and President & Chief Executive Officer of CanWel Distribution Limited. He previously held senior executive management positions in the food industry with RJR, Aylmer/DelMonte and RJR-Nabisco including Executive Vice President, Nabisco Brands Ltd during the period covered in the book Barbarians at the Gate. After his arrival in Canada in 1972, Tom worked with the retailer Eaton’s as an industrial engineer and then as a management consultant with Stevenson & Kellogg Ltd which later merged with KPMG.

Tom received a BA (Economics and Mathematics), BAI (Bachelor of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering) and M.Sc. in Manufacturing and Business from the University of Dublin, Trinity College. He is a registered P.Eng with Professional Engineers Ontario.

Tom is a board director of Vancouver Fraser Port Authority (Port Metro Vancouver) and Health Shared Services BC (HSSBC). He has served on numerous boards including: Versacold (TSE) from 1997 to 2007, Jardine JOS Synergy Ltd (Hong Kong), Howe Sound Pulp and Paper (JV of Canfor (TSE) & Oji Corporation of Japan (Nikkei), Day4 Energy (TSE), CanWel Distribution Ltd. and Aylmer Foods Warehousing.

Andrew MacDougall
Partner, Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP

A partner at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP, Andrew practices corporate and securities law, and is a leader in the firm’s corporate governance and executive compensation practices. He advises boards and in-house counsel on a broad spectrum of corporate governance issues, including directors’ duties, executive compensation, shareholder engagement and shareholder meeting matters. David is Senior Legal Counsel and Assistant Corporate Secretary for CGI Group Inc. He manages the day-to-day affairs of the CGI board of directors and its standing committees. Listed on the Toronto and New York stock exchanges, CGI Group Inc. is one of the largest independent information technology and business process services firms in the world.

David has a BA from Concordia University and a B.C.L./ LL.B from McGill University. He has published numerous articles on subjects ranging from directors’ liability and corporate governance to technology law issues.

Catherine McCreary
Governance Coach, Build Better Boards

Catherine is a former Director of Vancity and Central 1 Credit Union. At Vancity, she chaired the Audit, Nominations and Elections and the Governance and Conduct Review committees and was a member of the Task Force on Credit Union Governance. At Central 1, she chaired the Governance Committee and Governance Review Task Force reviewing Central 1’s rules. Today, Catherine works as a governance coach for member-based organizations and under the firm name Build Better Boards, she consults to co-operatives, trade unions and non-profit organizations. 

Catherine received her LL.B from the University of Calgary in 1983 and received the designation of Chartered Director from the Directors College of Canada in 2008.

Errol P. Mendes
Professor of Law, Faculty of Law, University of Ottawa and Advisor & Consultant on Corporate Governance

Errol is a lawyer, author, professor and has been an advisor and consultant to corporations, governments (including the Privy Council Office, Government of Canada), civil society groups and the United Nations. His teaching, research and consulting interests include public and private sector governance, conflict resolution, constitutional law, international law and human rights law and policy and has authored or edited seven leading texts in these areas. He has helped leading Canadian companies develop cutting edge ethics and integrity compliance systems. Since 1979, Professor Mendes has taught at law faculties across the country, including the University of Alberta, the University of Western Ontario and the University of Ottawa.

Mary O’Malley
Vice President, Environment and Sustainability, Prudential Financial Inc.

Mary currently serves as Vice President, Environment and Sustainability with Prudential Financial. In this position, she is responsible for leading Prudential’s integrated sustainability and environmental initiatives worldwide. She has been with Prudential for more than 30 years and has held various positions in the corporate social responsibility, corporate communications, issues management and human resources departments. In addition to her professional commitment, she serves as a board member of the Center for Civic Responsibility. 

Mary is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Massachusetts.

Gordon Orlikow
Senior Client Partner, Korn/Ferry International

Gordon is a leader of Korn/Ferry International’s industrial practice in western & central Canada. He also leads the firm’s market-leading Canadian Human Resources Center of Expertise. In the course of his career with Korn/Ferry, he has placed hundreds of executives into many of Canada’s leading and emerging organizations. Before joining Korn/Ferry, Gordon held senior human resources executive roles with some of North America’s best-known companies in sectors as diverse as manufacturing, healthcare, transportation, agri-business, and professional services. He is Chair of the Board of Athletics Canada (the governing body for track and field in Canada) and is a member of the Canadian Olympic Committee.

Robert Patzelt QC
Vice President, Risk Management and General Counsel, Scotia Investments Ltd.

Robert is a past-president of the Canadian Bar Association - Nova Scotia and was the CBA’s National Treasurer and a member of the CBA National Executive. He is also a past-president of the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association (CCCA). In addition to this volunteer activity he is a past-chair of the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME) - Nova Scotia Division. He is on the national board of the CME and sits on its executive committee.  During the day he is Vice President and General Counsel and a member of the executive team for Scotia Investments Limited – a diversified holding company whose interests encompass such diverse activities as paper (linerboard, corrugated packaging, papercores, coated freesheet), pulp and foam manufacturing, energy, recycling, floral, timberlands, medical devices and construction materials. Currently, he is Co-Chair of the Premier’s Economic Advisory Council, Nova Scotia. Robert has written papers and spoken to groups all over North America on a variety of legal and risk management issues. 

Robert is a Fellow (FCIP) of the Insurance Institute of Canada, a recipient of the Ontario Risk and Insurance Management Society’s (ORIMS) Don Stuart Award, the Canadian Bar Association’s President’s Award and the Queen’s Jubilee Medal for his contributions to Canada.

Catherine Richmond
Senior Vice President, Financial Services Group, Aon Canada

Catherine is a member of Aon’s Financial Services Group for Western Canada. She has specialized in directors and officers (D&O) liability insurance since 1995 when she joined a global broker to lead their national D&O practice. She has advised some of Canada's largest and most complicated companies on all matters related to D&O including strategic planning, broking, claims advocacy, bankruptcy, M&A and corporate governance.

Catherine has a BA (Hons.) from Queen’s University and law degree from the University of Ottawa. She has made numerous presentations to boards of directors as well as professional associations such as CRIMS, BCRIMA, the Canadian Institute and the Ontario and New Brunswick bar associations. She teaches the director training courses for the Institute of Corporate Directors at the University of Calgary and University of Alberta.

Janis Riven
Adjunct Professor, John Molson School of Business, Concordia University

Janis, based in Montréal, has a growing consulting practice on governance and compliance matters with clients encompassing publicly listed and closely held companies, not-for-profits and government organizations. She is currently Adjunct Professor at the John Molson School of Business, Concordia University, where she teaches corporate governance and was instrumental in developing an international sustainability certification program for investment professionals. She is a well known speaker both in Canada and abroad at conferences on corporate governance, and has acted as a facilitator for boards and board committees of a number of different organizations seeking to improve their effectiveness. Janis’ last corporate position was with RBC Financial Group where she served as Vice President, Compliance and Secretary for RBC Insurance. 

Janis is Immediate Past President of Chartered Secretaries Canada, the Canadian division of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA), an international teaching organization focused on governance. She is currently President of the Québec Branch of ICSA Canada. She is a member of the Québec Bar and a Fellow (FCIS) of ICSA, and holds a number of board positions.

Cathy Rozman
Board Liaison Officer, Hamilton Health Sciences Corporation

Cathy currently holds the position of Board Liaison Officer at Hamilton Health Sciences, an academic teaching hospital that includes six hospitals and a cancer centre located on five sites. She also provides governance services to the Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation, its fundraising partner. Over the past 10 years, she has developed expertise in governance, through attendance, participation and certification in a number of forums and symposiums sponsored through the Ontario Hospital Association’s Governance Centre for Excellence, the Governance Institute, Institute for Healthcare Information and McMaster University Directors College. She has participated on the planning committee for the OHA Corporate Secretaries Annual Conference and has developed sessions focusing on governance practices, including minute-taking, policy development, strategic planning and enhancing board effectiveness for a number of not-for-profit organizations. A recent interview on administrative practices in the board office appeared in the December 2011 issue of The Board Advisor.

Kaylynn Schroeder
Vice President, Human Resources, Cameco Corporation

Kaylynn Schroeder is the vice-president of human resources at Cameco Corporation. She is responsible for the leadership of human resources and in addition provides direction for the facilities team at Cameco. Kaylynn’s role is to provide the strategic development of Cameco’s business objectives relating to Cameco’s future and present workforce; her assessment of employee and company needs, industry trends, employment trends, current and future costs aligns HR programs with Cameco’s business objectives. Under Kaylynn’s direction, continual review and development of programs supports the diverse needs of employees and ensures that Cameco’s reputation as a leading employer continues to grow.

Kaylynn joined Cameco in 2007 from an international consulting firm. During her 21 years with the firm, she worked as a senior vice-president until 1994, and then as executive vice-president for the central/western regions. Kaylynn is a certified employee benefits specialist, and a fellow of the Life Management Institute.

 

Shelley Sunohara
Vice President, SimpleLogic Inc.

Shelley is Vice President of SimpleLogic Inc. and an expert plain language consultant, writer and project manager. She directs SimpleLogic’s design team and has led disclosure projects for a variety of clients in Canada and the United States, including companies in the telecommunications, mining, energy, financial services, aerospace and retail sectors.

Shelley has over 25 years of experience in marketing and communications, including 10 years in financial services. Her work has covered a variety of disciplines, from branding and advertising to corporate and investor communications, client research and media relations. Before joining SimpleLogic, she held senior management positions with RBC Financial Group, and spearheaded the development of its first plain language mutual funds prospectus before plain language rules were introduced in Canada.

Shelley holds a BA from Laurentian University, a certificate in Marketing Management from the Richard Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario and has passed the Canadian Securities Course.

Alex Todd
Founder, GovernanceCommittee.com

Alex is Founder of GovernanceCommittee.com, a proposed peer support network and resource centre for informing the work of governance committees. His research has uncovered corporate governance styles associated with distinct measures of firm performance, which underpins his novel corporate governance investment screen that has significantly outperformed the stock market since 2006.  He is also the architect of the Aspirational Corporate Governance framework, for use by governance committees to improve board conditions for sustainable business value creation. Alex’s work has been published in academic textbooks and professional publications internationally. He also publishes The Corporate Governance Daily, an online newspaper.

Susan Todd

A respected voice internationally on sustainability reporting and assurance, Susan is Principal of Solstice Sustainability Works Inc., supporting organizations to realize their sustainability goals through a blend of sustainability strategy, governance, management systems, reporting and stakeholder engagement. She has been a trusted advisor to organizations from across the spectrum of business, government and not-for-profit organizations, including TELUS, Mountain Equipment Co-op, the City of Burnaby, VANOC, lululemon athletica, Teck Resources and BC Hydro, among others.

She broke ground with the first independent assurance of social and environmental reporting in North America on Vancity’s 1997 Social Report. She served on the inaugural Sustainability Experts Advisory Panel of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) and was a member of the Human Rights Advisory Group in the development of the Global Reporting Initiative’s G3 Sustainability Guidelines. In 2003, Susan launched The Accountability Project which has now delivered licensed training on sustainability reporting, assurance and stakeholder engagement to more than 400 managers and executives from six continents. 
Susan is a chartered accountant with a B.Comm (Hons.), from Queen's University and a master’s degree in Resource and Environmental Management from Simon Fraser University.

Shannon Walker
President, WhistleBlower Security Inc.

Shannon is the Founder and President of Whistleblower Security Inc., an ethics and risk management company with clients worldwide, that protects and shelters organizations through allowing employees to anonymously report cases of fraud, embezzlement, and harassment, etc.

Shannon served on the West Vancouver District Council from 2008-2011 and currently sits on the Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation, Dr. Peter Housing Society boards and the West Vancouver District’s Community Centre Society Services Board.

She earned a Bachelor of Applied Science in Communications at Simon Fraser University, then a Master of Arts in Communications at Pepperdine University in California.

Joanne Westwood
Manager, Accountability Reporting, Vancity

Originally from the United Kingdom, Joanne describes herself as a practitioner in ‘integrated thinking and reporting’ with a passion for community and the great outdoors. She is Manager, Accountability Reporting at the Vancouver City Savings Credit Union, commonly referred to as Vancity – a member-owned financial institution in Vancouver, British Columbia and the largest English-speaking credit union in Canada. Joanne is accountable for ensuring Vancity has reporting practices that enable holistic, values-based decision making in support of the company’s business strategy and vision to redefine wealth.
